👖CHRISTOPHER MUNAR
It was the eleventh hour before my FIP students’ finals, and the familiar, adrenaline-fueled chaos of last-minute pull-outs had firmly set in. As an instructor, you want your students' final fashion photography projects to be absolutely flawless, which meant we needed the perfect accessories to elevate their visions. On a whim, amidst the frenzy, I PMd Christopher Munar, crossing my fingers that he might let us borrow some of his exquisite pieces. Without missing a beat, he booked a Grab Express for delivery.
Holding his intricate, light-catching designs in my hands again brought me right back to the very first time we met. It was years ago, on the bustling set of a Style Weekend cover shoot featuring none other than Pia Wurtzbach. For Christopher, it was a monumental milestone—his very first editorial for a magazine. It’s a day that remains an unforgettable story for him, a core memory etched even deeper into our local fashion history when Pia went on to capture the Miss Universe crown shortly after.
Since those early days, Christopher has evolved into one of the country's most sought-after Filipino jewelry artisans, becoming the secret weapon for brides, pageant queens, and fashion editorials alike. we sat down with the designer to catch up on his incredible journey from his first statement pieces to his dreams for the global stage.
Can you share how you first got started in accessory designing, particularly for weddings and pageants?
I was based in Singapore before returning to the Philippines while waiting for my visa renewal. During that time, I began creating statement accessories and posting them on Instagram. Fashion stylist Nio Manzano came across my work and reached out, asking if my pieces could be used for Philippine Fashion Week collections by designers Ulysses King and Roland Lirio.
At first, I couldn’t believe it—Philippine Fashion Week felt like such a big platform. Despite my hesitation, I took the leap. After the show, several stylists working with magazines and celebrities approached me, and that moment truly marked the beginning of my journey.
What were the early challenges you faced, and how did you overcome them?
One of the biggest challenges was establishing trust and recognition in a highly competitive industry. I overcame this by staying consistent, continuously refining my craft, and allowing the quality of my work to speak for itself. Each satisfied client became a stepping stone in building my credibility.
Was there a defining moment when you realized this was your true calling?
It became real for me when I started seeing celebrities and pageant queens—both local and international—wearing my pieces. Being featured in fashion editorials was another pivotal moment. That’s when I knew this was more than just a passion—it was my purpose.
How would you describe your signature style when it comes to bridal and pageant accessories?
My style leans toward timeless elegance with a modern sensibility. I focus on intricate detailing, refined silhouettes, and a balance between sophistication and statement—ensuring each piece enhances the wearer without overpowering them.
How do you balance client requests with your own creative vision?
I see every project as a collaboration. I listen closely to my client’s vision and preferences, then bring in my expertise to elevate the design. It’s about finding harmony between their personality and my artistic direction.
Can you walk us through your process from concept to finished piece?
It begins with a consultation to understand the client’s story, theme, and personality. From there, I develop sketches and carefully select materials that align with the concept. Once approved, I handcraft each piece with meticulous attention to detail until it reaches its final, refined form.
How do you approach designing for a bride versus a pageant contestant?
Designing for a bride is deeply personal and sentimental—it’s about enhancing her natural elegance and complementing her overall look. For pageant contestants, the approach shifts toward impact and stage presence, creating pieces that stand out while still reflecting individuality.
Where do you usually draw inspiration from—nature, fashion history, cultural heritage, or personal experiences?
My inspiration is a blend of all these elements. Nature plays a strong role in shaping many of my designs, alongside cultural heritage and personal experiences that add depth and meaning to each creation.
Are there particular designers or artists who have influenced your work?
I’ve always been drawn to designers who prioritize craftsmanship and timeless design. Their dedication to detail and storytelling continues to influence how I approach my work.
Can you share a memorable project or client experience that had a big impact on you?
One of the most meaningful moments for me was seeing a bride and her mother both wearing my creations. It reminded me that my work becomes part of deeply personal milestones—woven into family stories and lasting memories.
Are there any dream collaborations or projects you hope to pursue next?
I would love to see Anne Curtis wearing my accessories. Her style is effortlessly timeless.
